Interesting. I wonder if this demonstrates the collective wisdom of seasoned board members?
So here is a question: What constitutes a serious subject? Politics, religion, cultural clashes, all the stuff on the nightly news? I suppose we have to have a serious board, but I rather dread it. We are all "adults" here so we should be able to handle rational discussions, right? Guess again!
I probably won't participate much in this thread because I can faintly hear my mother's voice admonishing, "Fools' names and fools' faces always appear in public places." Of course, she was talking about writing on bathroom walls, not US politics. Since I'm not particularly good at debating issues I'm afraid of this board. I suspect I always sound like one of the "fools" my mom was talking about and anyway even if I'm right I can't stand up to a good attack.
That's why for entertainment I prefer the "Conan Solution" or Terry Pratchett's biting humor. (Cohen the Barbarian is a fav of mine. After DEATH, of course).
I know most others enjoy a good verbal tussle about almost anything or even nothing, but please don't let this board be a place that breeds real animosity between members. Let's all at least pretend we can handle diversity as, indeed some can.

Well, to be fair, "serious" here doesn't necessarily equate to "debates". To me, "serious" has a broader definition. For example, someone could open up a topic about a (serious) hobby they're particularly proud of here. Since it wouldn't be technically counted as something for the "fun" area the "serious" area would be more suited to it. I'm sure such a topic would be something you could participate in. I'm also sure there are other non-debating "serious" topics that will pop up here that you could find yourself comfortable posting in. As for "debates", I love a good one as much as (or probably more) than the next guy (or gal for the sake of non-sexism, or TV/TS/cross-dresse for the sake of all the weirdos! ) and I don't particularly mind a debate being "lively" - as long as it doesn't turn nasty. When that happens have no delusions that good old Marty won't be afraid to bust some skulls. Hopefully I won't have to do that too often. Though I may have to ban Wiz from this area in a pre-emptive strike!

I understand what you're saying, Mari. I've shied away from serious topics since I got involved in one with Jem on one of the GUTS forums and she de-friended me on fb. Haven't heard a word from her since. I'm quite open to listen to other people's opinions without getting personal or angry, but not everyone is. So unless I feel a strong need I doubt I will participate in many 'debates'.

What was that about winning an argument on the internet and how it's like winning in the special Olympics?
That really is all I have to say on the matter.

I think we weeded out those types now. And if anyone new tries to stir the pot, I'll beat them with the spoon :-P You have a right to express your opinions, and also a right to ignore posts if you don't agree with them. Don't let the buttfaces deter you from voicing your opinion, for every one buttface, there are several other people that would like to hear your thoughts and you might even be able to influence others to see things in a different light. Although, that preemptive strike might be helpful... LOL
