So this past fall, I discovered Minecraft and just love it. My older daughter got a subscription from a friend and after I saw her playing I asked if I could. I was hooked pretty quickly.
Who else has been bitten by the bug?

Ah, man... so many sleepless nights.
My latest project was to build an entire fantasy viking village. It was half-done until a fire burnt a lot of it down.

I've never heard of this game. Is it online or what?

@ Pred - that's a real shame! How did that happen? I'd recommend a less flammable substance than wood for building in, but then it wouldn't be a Viking village. Personally, I am rather proud of the obsidian tower I built. I play on peaceful mode, and not on a server at all, though. I know some people would call that cheating. @ Billy - It's just a download, I think. It's been around for about three years and they've had a couple of cons for it, even. I don't think they had many people there, though. The basic idea is you mine for resources and craft things you need. (mine + craft, very descriptive name!) The real beauty of it is that you can arrange the world to your liking. It looks very old-fashioned, because the maneuverable parts are large cubes. Your character is two blocks high and less than one wide. Despite that, I just love the scenery! Go to www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/ if you're interested. It's a fan site for helping with the how and why of doing things. They also have history on anything they have a page for. If you want to know when wolves were first added, for instance, they have that in there. I don't actually know where to go to buy it, or exactly how much it costs. Sorry for that!

Yeah, that happens with wood. Lightning strike - your house burns down. You light a fire inside and the ceiling isn't high enough, your house burns down. So now I'm trying to use as much stone as I can to fire-proof it whilst still keeping the Viking Feel. Peaceful mode is for when you don't want to be bothered by creepers. I like the challenge, though I don't play on hard. But did you have to mine all the obsidian or did you go into creative mode? Billy You can buy it and create an account here minecraft.net/It's great fun. It looks 8-bit, though the graphics are actually quite good. And, essentially, you can do whatever your imagination can come up with. You mine blocks of resources, you create materials to build with and you erect Viking villages (which will be burnt down), or castles, towers, full medieval cities.

Oh, never thought of lightning wiping out a village! I don't suppose there is a lightning rod in the game, darn it. I was pretty amazed the first time rain turned into a thunder and lightning storm. I was mining in my little cave when I heard the thunder and just had to go up top to see if there was lightning, too. I love how realistic some parts of this game are, like the moon having phases and the stars actually turning above at night - and lightning! I can be pretty bad at making the controls for a game do what I want, especially when there's running and jumping involved. I am terrible at Mario on the Wii, for instance. Because of that, I started on peaceful so I wouldn't die all the time. I still plan on switching to survival eventually, but I keep thinking I'd like to finish something else first. So far I have completely explored my first cave system, built and partially furnished the tower, and found a few more diamonds while exploring my huge cave system. I am still not done with that place, and don't hope it'll run out of new twists and turns anytime soon. But I did finally get bored with caving and started building a rail system. As for the obsidian, I did not turn on creative mode, although there have been times I've been tempted. I patiently waited until I'd found three diamonds and made a diamond pickaxe, then even more patiently waited until I'd mined a couple hundred blocks before starting to build. I only got about half-way with that, but then it didn't seem quite so long to mine the rest. Lemme see if I can attach a picture of it in here ... well, I'm not sure where on my computer those screenshots were saved to, so I'll have to research that first!

Wow, that is wicked. I haven't built anything in obsidian yet. Except for a Nether portal, obviously. And on my first trip to the Nether I died and lost everything... so that sucked.
You know, we could try to figure out how multiplayer works and set up something. I'm pretty sure you have to buy or rent a MP sever, though.

I love Minecraft I have spent so many hours playing it, and you're right, it is so realistic that when I'm in a cave and I almost fall off the edge or into lava I gasp out loud and have definitely almost had a heart attack from falling off the roof of my castle :-D ...I even have a Creeper plushie! It goes sssssssssssssss....boom! when you squeeze it. Also have a pair of replica torches over my headboard.

My daughter's friend hosted a game they were playing. I don't know the details but I'll try to remember to ask. Pictures: the first is the obsidian tower. The second is my main 'living' room with bed, table and chairs, and a couch off to the right. The third is a view from my 'front porch', showing the entrance to my first little cave system and my crops, plus a glass house underwater to the right. I'm ashamed to say I went swimming in lava early on in my minecraft 'career'. There was gold just out of reach.

Is it double-posting if there's been a week or more since your last post? My last post is already getting long. Pred - that wiki site I mentioned earlier, www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/, has instructions on hosting a multiplayer game. It didn't sound like it would cost anything, but I don't remember all the details.

I'm easy on the double-posting at the moment, especially where a little time has gone by. I've done it myself here. If the place ever takes off then maybe I'll lay a few ground rules on it but right now I'm not really bothered.
But, back on topic. I love games where you can build things (I mostly play the Sims only for building the houses!). I'll have to have a look into it.

As I recall, if you can host it yourself there's no cost, but you need a really good PC for that and no one can play when the host isn't on.
Otherwise, you have to rent a server and for that you need a certain type of account and to pay a monthly fee.
If we're all game, we can rent a server on someone's account and all can pitch in.

Pred - Hm, I hadn't thought too much about the can't-play-if-the-host-isn't. And since we're in different countries we might find it difficult to coordinate game times. I'd love to play with a group. I'm getting a little bored with the two worlds I currently have, and multiplayer could make it very interesting again. I don't actually have my own account for it yet. I was hoping for an account for a mother's day present but no such luck! However, I would be open to pitching in on the server rent and would certainly get my own account before we got started. I'll call it an early birthday present to myself! Based on posts to date, I think xax, you and I are the only ones interested. For the sake of planning, you should know I am usually only on here Saturday mornings.

Rereading last week's post, I realize I should have included Billy and Marty as possibly interested. Very unkind of me! This week while mining I found 10 more diamonds! All within about 20 blocks of each other. Previously I'd made a diamond sword and chestplate. Now I have diamond leggings, too! All three items are enchanted. I did get enough rail system complete to get the achievement of travelling one kilometer by rail. Now I am not so interested in building more railroad. It IS pretty convenient for getting places in a hurry, though.
