They don't have to be the best games in the world but they have to fascinate you and draw you in with compelling characters and story lines.
I'll begin wit a game I played a couple of years ago: Red Dead Redemption (which could have been better titled with half a thought). It was GTA set in the Wild Wild West and I absolutely loved it (I don't have it but if I did I'd do it again). The graphics were good (the scenery in parts was simply breath-taking) and the game play everything you'd expect from a GTA game. But it was the main character and the story line that had me hooked.
You play the bad guy turned good. Although good is a relative term here. Retired is a better description. Retired to a little farm with a wife and kid at the start of the game after a life of murder and robbery as part of a gang.
But now you've been hunted down by a federal marshal and your only recourse is to do his bidding - hunt down and bring in the remainder of your old gang.
The game area comprises a fictional version of the southern states (think Texas) and Mexico (eventually) and here you'll travel on foot, on horseback, on train. And even, towards the end, in an early model car. You can play poker or blackjack in saloons, hunt down (kill or capture - your choice) baddies for bounties, herd horses. Heck, you can even go mano a mano, going quickdraw with various tough guys.
It offers freedom of movement with compelling story lines. The ending (I won't spoil it for you) you just don't see coming. Though you should!
It's one of those games that turns into more than a game. It's fascinating.
So... that's one of my "atmospheric" games. I've got more but I'll leave them for another time. What are yours?
