Has anyone else started to read Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series? I have been reading it for several years and to be honest I had a very long break, but decided to continue with them at the end of last year. I'm currently up to Knife of Dreams, so not many more to go before I finish. I'm interested to see what the ones written after Robert Jordan's death are like. I'm wondering if the guy he chose to take them over will do the story justice. I hope he does.
I enjoy the story, but at times find I need a break because there are just so many characters and so much going on. In almost a thousand pages only a week passes, if that. This can be a bit tedious for me at times, especially when I can't remember who's who. But anyway, if you're reading them, what do you think?

I read the first several books years and years ago but eventually gave up on them because, to me, they felt too repetitious. It seemed as if the same old story was being recycled on and on. It may have just been me but that's how I felt (had the same problem with Terry Goodkin's The Sword of Truth series ). I remember very little about it, although I do recall it had one of the all-time most annoying characters I've ever had the displeasure to despise - Nynaeve. Dunno why but she set my teeth on edge!

Yeah I remember Jem saying that she annoyed her as well. I think the problem lies in Jordan's representation of women. He is a bit patronising. He describes his female characters as he thinks women are or as they are to him, not as they are in reality. He uses a lot of stereotypes - Nynaeve is just one of them.

I've just started reading the first book and it is promising. So I'll stay away of this thread to avoid spoilers

Just finished the first book. It was a great read, never boring or confusing to make me wanna put it down. Saying that, it didn't fully capture me either, so I couldn't put it down - I pretty much read it only when I was on the train on my trip to work or back, and sometimes not all the way.
It was an obvious quest story and I knew pretty much what was going to happen, but not always the path to it, obstacles, outcomes. All in all, I enjoyed it and I'm moving to the second book straight away.

So many people talk about this series that I keep thinking I should get it. The only thing is it's got so many books in it - that's a touch expensive.

Just to REALLY belatedly answer Billy's question .... I started recently, after rave reviews from a few of my friends. I really enjoyed the first book and need to get back into reading the second. To answer the question about the author who took over after Robert Jordan's death, his name is Brandon Sanderson and everything I've heard has been good, apparently he apprenticed under Robert Jordan before he passed away and the books were as good as they could have been (secondhand data albeit). Firsthand data-wise, I have listened to a writing podcast that Brandon Sanderson does called "Writing Excuses" which is phenomenal.
