It is a small tradition for me to start this topic on a forum I join as a tribute to one of the best fantasy series I've ever read. I just hope GRR Martin would writing a bit faster (while maintaining same quality), because I can hardly wait to see them to the end.
So, many things happened since the last time I've spoken to you guys in a forum about these books - at least another book came out (A Dance with Dragons) or maybe even two (A Feast for Crows). But probably one of the most welcomed addition were TV series A Game of Thrones, with the third season being out by the end of this month.
So, any comments?

I have to say I've enjoyed the TV series - it's been fascinating seeing all the characters come to life.
As for the books, I lost track at one point and tried to start again (failing to get halfway through A Game of Thrones). I keep telling myself I'll reread them again but I think it will have to wait until the final book and read them all in one long sitting.

I love the books, probably the best series I've read, couldn't put them down when I read them. I was really impressed with the first season of the TV series as well, it stayed very faithful to the books - still need to get round to watching the 2nd season. I half worry at the speed he's writing he might never finish it

You know, I remember you being excited about the Song of Ice and Fire and posting about it on the old for'ms, Pex, but for some reason I never really got into it.
Now after having seen the first season of the TV series (yes, I am a late convert), I'm completely hooked. Those are some of the best-crafted characters I've had the pleasure to read in a long while.
I just wish the lazy bugger would hurry up and finish the next book. But don't tell him that or... you know what happens.

Martin, I didn't really enjoy the first book, A Game of Thrones. I felt it was a bit of a slog to get through, so I completely understand why you couldn't finish it. However, having said that, once I got past the first book I absolutely loved everyone since.

I'm sure the TV series encouraged more people to read the books and I know I've seen more than a few reading them on trains. So, you're not the only one Pred. We welcome you to the flock ASoIaF is my most favourite fantasy series so far and I can hardly wait to see how the story ends. I was (and still am) quite a die hard fan, so I went to different forums, looked at different theories, been certain of the things that would happen in the next book and GRRM always managed to surprise me.

I agree with Pex. Song of Fire and Ice is my favorite fantasy series. I only hope the next book publishes soon!

I finally got those books for Christmas. (It's amazing how convenient it is when you order your own presents online and tell the kids 'look in that bag and pick something for me'.) I remember a thread on IWD that linked a quiz on which ASoIaF character are you, and knowing nothing of the story, I got Jon Snow. Someone told me he was a lot like Drizzt, so I was pleased and decided to pick up the series sometime. I am not that excited about the series now that I have it. Too much political intrigue for me. And he keeps doing bad things to the characters I like, while the ones I love to hate slip out of bad situations and keep on living. I nearly put the book down ... when Bran fell. I've just started the 4th book, A Feast For Crows. The series is a slow read for me, which is unusual. I put it down a lot, because I'm irritated. I've been working on this stuff since Christmas!! EDIT: Did up the spoiler properly. cool feature!!

That's amazing. I admit I was tempted to buy a replica of Ice (Stark's hereditary sword before it was melted down), but what some of those fans go into is maybe a bit too much for me But I would love to go to filming set.

LOL, it's well enough told, that's for sure. I keep hoping one or two of my favorites might make it out alive!

And now that the first episode of series 3 is out (wooooohoooo!), here's a question: have any of you played the Game of Thrones board game?

No, we haven't, but I did think about buying it a while ago. We never seem to have much spare time to fit that sort of thing in, although we do love games. We can't watch Game of Thrones until someone dls it and lends it to us.
