A shadowy figure steps out of the deep shade of the dense forest and looks around carefully, noting the thin string of smoke coming from one of several stone chimnies. Mixed emotions stir in the heart of the observer as she takes note of the creeping ruin that is slowly overtaking the once stately inn. Obviously the new owner has neglected the old place.
A disembodied growl and shriek of a dying rat break the watcher's nostalgic revery and she cautiously approaches the weathered front door. "Pooka," a mere hint of sound, brings a large cat-like creature to her side as she slowly opens the door to reveal a vacant common room. The room is cold, no fire burns in the hearth across the room and no innkeeper greets her from behind the sagging bar.
Mari shakes her head sadly remembering a past she isn't sure can be revived. Gliding silent across the room Mari raps sharply on the well worn, smooth, surface of the bar.
"Innkeeper! Some serivce out here! I'm the first paying customer you've had in what looks to be years!"

"EEEEP!" Stifling a scream Mari drops her hand to her dagger's hilt and searches the deep shadows in the direction of the voice. She preceives the faint outline of a man lounging in a chair near the unlit hearth. Pooka crouches at her side ready for the signal that will send him in for the kill.
"Stranger, you lead a dangerous life." She tries to mask the faint tremble in her voice with gruffness. She moves warily closer, curiosity overcoming her initial fright.
"Six years? Then I think you've earned the right to one on the house. Shall you steal it or shall I?"

You steal it and I'll cover you. You look a lot more agile than I do. I'm about as agile as a boulder rolling down a mountain!

It had been many years since they had last been inside this particular inn - many years since they had last seen Martin Spellweaver. Their last meeting had been here, before he had betrayed them, although he would say they had betrayed him. The inn looked old and deserted. Once a warm glow had shone from its windows. Now there was a dull light, perhaps the light of one or two candles. Who would be in there? She placed her hand on his arm and nodded toward the trees and then she seemed to melt into the shadows. The ranger was annoyed she had gone without him, but he steeled himself to wait.
Silently she entered without the occupants notice. The woman looked familiar. Dusty furniture was scattered around the common room and the floor was covered in what looked like 6 years worth of dirt. She stepped out of the shadows.

Mari turns and looks in the direction of the new visitors. She doubts that the old inn has seen this many visitors in one night for many years. There could be something more than coincidence at work. Has she accidentally stumbled into a rondezvous of some sort? Deciding to take the bold route she says,
"This - umm - gentleman and I were about to steal some ale. Will you join us?

Meanwhile, the barbarian has stepped through a crack in the old wooden floor and is stuck. So he fiercely stands his ground hoping no one notices!

"Stealing ale?" Norros frowns. "That sounds very wrong," he continues shaking his head.
"On the other hand, if there is some wine," he flashes a smile at the lady, "I wouldn't mind joining you in thr theft."
He moves further inside the establishment, glancing at big man, or at least the top half of him sticking above the floor. He nods politely.

Mari turns, looking for confirmation of her statement from her earlier companion, and completely misses seeing him because he is now two feet tall. With a warm grin in the attractive ranger's direction she says, "Let's get to it then!" and heads for the bar, determination reflected in her eyes.
Ale! At last!

Meanwhile the barbarian finds something to get a foot hold on so he can get out of the hole. Once out he looks down in the hole to see a skeleton surrounded by gold coins and realizes that he's lost interest in the ale!

Laurana continues to study the woman. She has no clue who the man stuck in the floor is or why he would attempt to give her orders, but she is sure she knows the woman. She moves around the room checking the old inn to see if there is anything amiss. As she does so she notices the strange man staring at his feet, at least she assumes it's his feet.

Mari busies herself behind the bar, blowing the dust out of old mugs and cups before pouring a sample from a tapped cask of ale. Sniffing delicately she finds the aroma just as bad as she suspected she might and then carefully sips.
"About what I'd expect," she mutters to the man beside her. "I wish you better luck with the wine!"
She fills her mug and another one for the Barbarian and heads back toward the cold hearth. She calls out to the Barbarian who seems to be fascinated by something at his feet, "As long as you've decided to dismantle the floor, fetch up some wood and let's get a fire going!"

Then suddenly the door slams open and a figure stands in the threshold, bow in hand, ready to strike. "First one to move, gets an arrow in the kneecap!"* * * Earlier..."That time of the year again, is it?"The man is lying on the forest floor staring up at the canopy. Could've sworn there was a tent there last night."Right, come on, time to go." And from somewhere in the forest the reply comes in the form of an annoyed neigh. "Well, you would think that, wouldn't you? That's because you're a bloody horse. Now, shut up and let's get moving."After a full day's journey they arrive at the inn. It's late at night and he's expecting to find it the same as he'd left it the year before, and the year before that. "Wait... what?" The horse neighs in reply. "Yes, I can see it too, you moron, I'm not colour blind. Wait, how did you... nevermind. There's someone in there. Bloody looters..." Getting off the horse, and working up to a proper angry fit, he readies his bow and prepares to storm the place. The place may be stinkhole, but I'll be damned if I let them defile it. He slams the door open and stands in the threshold, ready to fire."First one to move, gets an arrow in the kneecap! Wait... what?"Before him are three figures that seem familiar and some crazy bugger stuck in the floorboard. Is he dreaming this? Ever year he'd come back to this place hoping to find someone and now... it couldn't be. "You... must... be joking."
