Who are the greatest fantasy characters in your ever-so-humble opinions?

That's a tricky question. It's hard for me to move beyond the fact that I really like some characters and really don't like some others and not allow it to influence my opinion. For example, Catelyn Stark probably has everything that a character needs to be a great one - depth, personality, well developed traits, but I just don't like her. But since this is about opinions after all... I'll limit myself to two characters per book(s). Tyrion Lannister (A Song of Ice and Fire by GRR Martin) Arya Stark (As above) Quick Ben (Malazan Book of Fallen by Steven Erikson) Fiddler (As above) Jarlaxle Drizzt Pug (different books by Raymond E Feist) Nakor (as above) Gandalf Aragorn I'll add some more when I remember what other books I've read

I like lots of characters as well. I have to agree with Pex for a Song of Ice and Fire. Tyrion is great and I like Arya a lot.
Wheel of Time - Mat Cauthon LotR - Legolas and Gimli Feist - Aruther and Tomas Deverry - Salamanda and Evander

Some of my favourite characters:
Belgarath the Sorcerer (David Eddings) Polgara the Sorceress (David Eddings) Sparhawk (David Eddings) Tyrion Lannister (George R R Martin) Sonea (Trudi Canavan) Akkarin (Trudi Canavan) Opal Cowan (Maria V Snyder) Asher (Karen Miller) Pug (Raymond E Feist) Jimmy The Hand (Raymond E Feist) Commander Vimes (Terry Pratchett) Granny Weatherwax (Terry Pratchett) Quickening (Terry Brooks) Raistlin (Weis & Hickman) Alfred (Weis & Hickman)
I'll go into why I like each of these at a later date. Plus there are probably more off the top of my head.

I forgot about Jimmy the Hand and Polgara. I also forgot about Tanis.
You liked Quickening, Martin? I liked that other woman who began as the witch but I can't recall her name.

I would like to add some characters from Guy Gavriel Kay's books, but the books are in the garage and I can't be bothered to go and get them. I can't remember exact spelling of their names.

You liked Quickening, Martin? I liked that other woman who began as the witch but I can't recall her name. I wrote a song about Quickening once. I'll have to dig it up and post it in the creative area. And yes, I liked Quickening. I felt sorry for her, that her purpose in life was to die. And then she goes and falls in love... so sad.
Yes, I'm a sentimental at heart! As for the other, are you referring to the Ilse Witch? It's been a while since I read them.

Jon Snow and Daenarys (GRR Martin) Chade and Fitz (Robin Hobb) Maurynna Kyrissaean (Joanne Bertin) Akkarin (Trudi Canavan) Er'ril and Meric (James Clemens)
I'm sure I've forgotten some characters I really enjoyed writing about, but this was who came off the top of my head.

Can't believe I forgot Fitz. And Fool was great, too.

I can't believe I've missed out one of the all-time greatest fantasy characters of all time. DEATH! As in the Discworld version.
He gets so many great lines and is a real hoot.
